LIT Information

The Lifeguard-In-Training Program (LIT) is for those young men and women ages 13-15 who are interested in becoming lifeguards or learning more about how to become more competent in the ocean.  It is a rigorous program that focuses on physical conditioning, mental health, social skills, and building confidence.  Through the LIT program kids will learn ocean and beach safety, lifesaving techniques and procedures, and develop stronger swimming skills.  Each LIT is held to high standards of responsibility and maturity in order to prepare them for becoming ocean lifeguards.

For those LIT’s that are 15 years old, instruction in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Emergency Medical Response (EMR) is offered.

There are two 4-week sessions of LIT each summer.  For the 2016 summer our first session will run from Monday, June 20 to Friday, July 15 and the second session will run from Monday, July 18 to Friday, August 12.  LIT’s may choose to participate in only the first session, only the second session, or both sessions.  The LIT program runs from Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Bayview Park in Brant Beach.  There are also optional skills sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. for those LIT’s who feel that they need or want extra skill instruction.

Throughout the summer there are 5 tournaments that the LIT’s are invited to compete in.  For these tournaments, LIT will meet wherever the tournament is located (e.g., Barnegat Light, Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars, or Ship Bottom).  At these tournaments kids can compete in a variety of events pertaining to ocean lifeguarding, including a beach run, an ocean swim, and paddleboarding.  Although participation in the tournaments is not required, we do encourage LIT’s to compete in at least one tournament.

In order to participate in our LIT Program, the following requirements must be met:

  • Must be at least 13 years of age but no more than 15 years of age
  • Complete and submit a 2016 LIT Application
  • Submit a copy of your child’s birth certificate
  • Have a physician complete a physical form (included in the application packet)
  • Complete a swim test:  150 yards in 2:25 or less at the St. Francis Center Pool
  • Be willing to have a fun summer at the beach!

If your child meets all of the above requirements and is accepted into the program, there is a fee.  The fee covers administrative costs, the uniform that each LIT receives on their first day, entry into our LIT tournament, and other teaching materials.  The fee of the program is:

  • $225 for one session
  • $375 for both sessions

This fee is due only upon your child’s acceptance into the B-LIT program.
