B-LIT Information

The Beginner Lifeguard-In-Training Program (B-LIT) began in 2007 as a way to help 11 and 12 year olds become more comfortable and competent in the ocean.  Our B-LIT program focuses on teaching kids about reading the ocean, understanding dangerous ocean conditions, and how to use pieces of lifeguard rescue equipment.  The goal of this program is to have kids leaving feeling more comfortable and safe when they are in the ocean.

There are two 4-week sessions of B-LIT each summer.  For the 2018 summer our first session will run from Monday, June 25 to Friday, July 20 and the second session will run from Monday, July 23 to Friday, August 17.  B-LIT’s may choose to participate in only the first session, only the second session, or both sessions.  The B-LIT program meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 1:30-3:30 at Bayview Park in Brant Beach.  On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons we have extra skills sessions B-LIT’s may attend from 1:30-3:00.

Throughout the summer there are 4 tournaments that the B-LIT’s are invited to compete in.  For these tournaments, B-LIT will meet wherever the tournament is located (e.g., Barnegat Light, Harvey Cedars, or Ship Bottom).  At these tournaments kids can compete in a variety of events pertaining to ocean lifeguarding, including a beach run, an ocean swim, and paddleboarding.  Although participation in the tournaments is not required, we do encourage B-LIT’s to compete in at least one tournament.

In order to participate in our B-LIT Program, the following requirements must be met:

  • Must be at least 10 years of age but no more than 12 years of age
  • Complete and submit a 2018 B-LIT Application
  • Submit a copy of your child’s birth certificate
  • Have a physician complete a physical form (included in the application packet)
  • Complete a swim test:  150 yards in 3:00 or less at the St. Francis Center Pool
  • Be willing to have a fun summer at the beach!

If your child meets all of the above requirements and is accepted into the program, there is a fee.  The fee covers administrative costs, the uniform that each B-LIT receives on their first day, entry into our LIT tournament, and other teaching materials.  The fee of the program is:

  • $90 for one session
  • $150 for both sessions

This fee is due only upon your child’s acceptance into the B-LIT program.
